Written for flute quartet - 1st Flute, 2nd Flute, Alto Flute and Bass Flute.
The Crescent takes its name from that elegant, curving shape; at once the slender moon and a graceful architectural sweep.
The music unfolds in a long, singing arc.
Lyrical lines pass between the two C flutes, underpinned by the velvety warmth of alto and bass, before opening out into more energetic, dance-like passages.
Frequent changes of time and harmony keep all four parts alert and involved - no one is left just counting rests.
There are moments of close, almost jazzy chromaticism, moments of open, spacious calm, and plenty of rhythmic interplay that makes it rewarding to play and satisfying to listen to.
Accessible for a good intermediate to advanced ensemble, but with enough nuance and colour to hold a concert audience.
An interesting piece in a modern style.
